Paradox of Choice

The paradox of choice is the abundance of choices that we are faced with in everyday life. In life we are offered way more choices and options then we actually need, which makes us less satisfied when we want to buy something because we have expectations and we want to make them perfect, it makes it harder for us to go out and buy something simple, because we're faced with so many different kinds of products, whether your out trying to buy food, clothes, or electronics. We end up setting unreasonable expectations for us, making us question if we bought the right thing, and making us stress and feel bad about what we bought.

The effect on people's happiness is really just making them feel stupid if they bought the wrong thing, or the less expensive thing. It makes us question what we buy and go on thinking that there’s something wrong with us because we didn’t buy the right thing.

The paradox of choice makes us feel happy because we know that there’s a whole bunch of different stuff to choose from, but it also makes us feel unhappy because we know that there’s so much to choose from, and we don’t want to buy the "wrong" thing.

The paradox of choice affects my life because I’m also faced with the many options and choices we have today, and picking the wrong thing to buy can be very depressing. Buying the wrong thing means a lot more to teens then adults because we are faced with peers that judge, and they judge harshly on everything!
Whether it’s something from the clothes you wear, to shoes you wear, or even your makeup and friends.you could be feeling amazing about something you just bought, like a sweater, then someone comes up to you and goes "that sweater would of been better in blue, or brown" and instantly you feel like you've done something wrong, and you feel like you need to change it, immediately

The Power of Media.

Media is used to influence people to buy things. The more flattering the commercial, the more people will buy the advertised product. The more products that are sold, the more money the company makes. People are influenced by what they see advertised on TV, commercials and magazines. In the Pepsi ad, they used celebrities to help make their product seem more interesting and more desirable. In the book "Sex, Drugs and Cocoa Puffs”, Chuck Klosterman thinks "there is no "normal" because every one is being twisted by the same source simultaneously". Lastly , my personal ad, the axe commercial uses people to buy their product to try and make people believe that if they have axe cologne they will be more confident and be more popular. A lot of companies don't really care if you buy their product or not, all they care about is how much money they make off of their product.

The Pepsi ad taps into man's desires because of the women in the commercial. The women in the commercial are Britney Spears, Pink & Beyonce, they are very well known celebrities, who are also "good looking". They are dressed pretty much half naked and are in roman clothes, or in other words they have metal on their bodies. A lot of the angles in the camera are directly pointing at their breasts and bums, which is another reason why men like this Pepsi ad. Every time men think of Britney, pink or beyonce they will be reminded about the Pepsi add, therefore making them want to drink the Pepsi.

According to Chuck Klosterman ads like the Pepsi commercial sends subtle messages that affect the way humans interact. I believe that’s true, in the Pepsi add they mainly only show the girls, but for a few seconds they do show the Pepsi. Even though they don’t show the Pepsi as much as they show the girls, we still know its a Pepsi commercial, and we'll still want a Pepsi after the commercial is over, and they producers know that every time we think of Britney, pink or beyonce we'll want to drink a Pepsi.

The ad I chose was an Axe commercial, in the commercial a couple is at a family dinner and the boyfriends dad uses their washroom, and uses some of the gus axe body spray. When he returns the girlfriend smells him and does the classic "bow chicka wow wow" song. She starts doing un-realistic things like pretending to capture him like cow boys do. This ad attempts to get our emotions onto the product by making it seem that anybody who uses axe body spray will get "hit" on by the next girl that walks by you. It works because a lot of guys see the commercial and think that if that can happen to the guy in the commercial, it could happen to him. It also works because there all a lot of desperate guys out there, and if the commercial says it works then their going to believe it and go buy it. People buy axe because they think it will bring confidence to them. A lot of guys have self-esteem issues and if they see people on the commercials getting every girl that passes by them just because they sprayed axe on them, they will think that if they buy Axe that the same things will happen to them. It effects the interaction with people in larger societies because people will go on vacation somewhere and think that because they brought their axe body spray that their going to be noticed by a lot of girls, and when they aren’t, they get all upset and frustrated at the product because it always happens to people in the commercials. The commercials are really just setting people up for getting hurt, because no one in their right mind is going to smell you then jump on you singing the "bow chicka wow wow" song. Someone might tell you that you smell good, but really that’s all you’re going to get from them.

Media is a powerful thing, whether you choose to buy into it or not defines who you are. Commercials like the Pepsi Ad and Axe Body Spray are un-realistic because there’s a lot of stuff that goes on during these commercials that would never even happen to anyone in real life. Media gives out a lot of false advertisement and everybody wants to be just like the people in the magazines or the commercials just because its what’s "cool".

Diving Bell and The Butterfly.

In a way i believe imagination can replace the real world. Everyone pictures their life to what they wish it could be, instead of the way their life actually is, and if they really believe that what they wish could happen, is happening then their immagination is taking over the way they view the real world. I believe that if you were in a serious accident like Jean-Do Bauby, and were left alone for a long time that you would start believing your imagination because you wouldnt know whats really real anymore.
Imaginations are usually things that we wish could happen, but almost never happen. In the real world nothing we actually imagine comes true. So no real life isn't just what we imagine.

The Matrix.

I believe reality is something that is real to you. Reality is viewed differently by others, but because they don't think the same way as you, doesn’t make it UN real. Reality comes in different ways, good and bad; unfortunately it’s all still real. The people around us and the events that happen everyday is reality. Different experiences determine how a lot of us view what reality really means, some of us have good experiences and some of us have bad experiences and because of those experiences we all have different views about reality and if its a good thing or a bad thing. I personally believe reality is a good thing because it lets you know your limits in life, like if you find something impossible to do, or if someone you like doesn't feel the same way, you would know to stop trying because that’s reality and you cant change that.

We know stuff is really real because we are experiencing it everyday and the only thing that really matters is if you believe it’s real.

In a way we are living in the real world, because we face everyday problems and get through them, but in a way we aren’t living in a real world because of media. Media gives out false advertisement and makes people want to live their life the way people do in commercials and in magazines, but really not even the people who are in the commercials or magazines live their life’s that way. Everyone tries too hard to make their lives perfect like people in the commercials that they forget what living is really about, living life the way you want to, and not caring what other people think or how other people live their lives.

Trix Commercial

The rabbit in the Trix commercial represents a nerd in society because of the way he acts and dresses. The lady in the mall asks a question and like a common nerd he’s the first one to raise his hand and he tries extremely hard to answer the question. He also dresses "nerdy", with the black glasses and blue and orange-stripped shirt, which is really nerdy. He also knows what he wants and doesn't listen to her when she tries to convince the other kids to buy her product. The lady in the mall looks extremely happy, but she dresses weird, she’s wearing a green jacket with a pink bow tie. She represents someone with extreme power and thinks that she can get the kids to do whatever it is she wants, in this case is buy her company's cereal. In society the kids just look like normal kids gathering around something that’s happening at a mall and being curious and wanting to try something new. They are also young and can be influenced very easily, if the lady tells them her cereal is good they of course will want to try it.

The message that is being transmitted based on these representations is that the spoke person is the representing a business that has control over their consumers, but the trix rabbit is smarter then the business and knows what he wants. The kids on the other hand are stupid and are convinced to buy the businesses product. The overall message of this commercial is that businesses have control over their consumers and use it to their advantage to get consumers to buy more of their product. They use media to influence society and convince them that their product is the best out there.

Definition of Meaning.

What the word meaning means to me is self expression of your opionon and views. Everything has it's own meaning and its the way you view it personally that makes it meaningful. Everyone has their own personal views on what the meaning of something is, but it's what you think that really affects the way you think and believe. Meaning is your personal interpertation of languauge and images that surround you in everyday life. Meaning is how you put life into context. Meaning is about thinking about things the way you want to and believing in what you think about it. Symbolism, acceptions, expression of self, answers, purpose and insights help define what my personal definion of meaning is.

connected or random?

I believe that everything that happens in the world is connected somehow. I don't believe that luck only happens to some people, I believe that you have to wait for something to happen and if it doesn’t happen to you, but it happens to someone else that doesn’t mean anything, it just means it’s not your turn. I also believe that people who seem to want things a lot more then other people tend to not get what they want as fast. They of course will think that luck and good things will only come to richer and luckier people , but really all you have to do is work hard and not really think about what you want the most and soon enough you'll get it. Growing up I’ve always believed in fate and that everything happens for a reason. I also believe in God and how he made everything the way it is for a reason, I don’t think he wanted everyone to be the same and have the same job and everything. Some people do have a bad life, I don’t believe god gave them that certain path, I believe that he gave everyone a good future, but its up to the person to determine how they want to make it. Example; a homeless person. They weren’t always homeless, they could always try to find new jobs and go to shelters. People don’t need to make everything a big deal, just have a bit of faith and believe in what you’re doing and sooner or later, things will change.
